Planning a trip to Europe | overstated
My coworker Cameron gives a really great overview on how to plan a cost-effective and interesting trip to Europe. It’s a must read for anyone in trip planning mode.
As I mentioned a bit over a month ago, I recently bought a 1985 diesel Mercedes with the plan to convert it to run on vegetable oil.
Today, I made the final leap and took my new pet down the block to Lovecraft Biofuels. About 3 hours and $737 later, she was fully converted. They officially hacked my car! Here’s a peek under the hood:
After a quick trip to Smart & Final (Costco was closed for Memorial Day), I was in possession of seven 35 lb containers of corn oil. I couldn’t contain my excitement and filled up right at Smart & Final. I received a few strange looks in the parking lot as I screwed a bottomless gatorade bottle into the fuel tank, lifted up a giant vat of oil, and started pouring. I had let the gas get down to about 1/8 of a tank just so that I could start smelling that sweet, popcorn-y smell of a vegetable oil powered car as soon as possible, so I was able to put in two full 35 pound containers with room to spare.
I loaded the unused oil containers into the trunk and hit the road, noticing nothing different at all in terms of my car’s performance but feeling much better about my personal effect on the environment.
I’ll keep you posted as I get more used to the new routine of filling up and maintaining my new car. In the meantime, here are a few pictures of her with her Lovecraft stickers on (which they give to you after your conversion).

Just like every other person in the online media world, I’ve been pretty excited by Facebook’s announcement yesterday of their F8 development platform (great coverage of many of the apps by Mashable).
But I’ve spent the last hour this morning testing out some apps. And so far I’m oh-for-five. Hopefully it is just a post launch glitch in the Facebook API somewhere?
Here are my experiences so far, in chronological order of my disappointment. Note that these reviews represent my experiences with the third-party service within the Facebook interface. The apps are surely working just fine on their own standalone websites, to which I’ve linked:
Come on Facebook; I really love the openness of your strategy. But it doesn’t do much good if that actual apps that developers submit don’t work properly. Maybe you are just having a bad morning due to all of the traffic and attention, and it is affecting all of these apps. I’ll try to give you (and each of the above application developers) the benefit of the doubt for now, because I really want this openness thing to catch on!
The latest film from my friend Dan is up on IMDB. Looks like it will be 2008 before it’s done. And to think, if I was still in NYC I could have helped him with really important things like holding the boom or getting donuts.
